20/12/09 - Sydney Marathon Clinic

Garry Keir completed the half marathon in 1:48:11, the sole Southside Masters representative at this month's event.

20/12/09 - No Events Christmas Eve

There will be no meeting on Christmas Eve December 24. Races will resume on New Years Eve December 31.

A provisional program for January 2010 is now available here.

The committee of Southside Masters wishes all runners and their families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Have fun, stay safe and we look forward to seeing you on the track in January.

6/12/09 - Central Coast Half Marathon

Garry Keir (1:48:36) and Bob Fickel (2:00:20) completed the half marathon today at The Entrance.

5/12/09 - The Mud Run

Jonathon Shaw completed the 12km Mud Run course at Glenworth Valley in 49:16 to claim 3rd place in the M40-49 category.

22/11/09 - Sydney Marathon Clinic

Very hot conditions were experienced at SMC this month with temperatures peaking at 30 degrees by 9:30am. Tim Yates (1:45:27), Garry Keir (1:51:26), Bob Fickel (2:05:32) and Michael Gentle (2:43:36) completed the half marathon course; while John Dawlings (40:27), David Burns (55:56) and Aaron Gentle (1:05:25) ran in the 10km event.

19/11/09 - Movember

Thank you to everyone who supported Tim Yates' Movember fundraising at the dinner. A total of $76.50 was raised on the night. Donate online now

8/11/09 - Run 4 Fun
Magda Karimali-Poulos has won the inaugural Run 4 Fun Women's 10km event at Homebush in the time of 36:34. Verity Tolhurst placed third in 38:01 (1st, F40-49). Congratulations to Magda & Verity.

8/11/09 - Fisher's Ghost

There was a good turn out of Southside runners for the Fisher's Ghost fun run at Campbelltown. The 10km event saw John Dawlings (41:31), Tim Yates (46:04), Garry Keir (50:08), Agnieszka Toole (51:45), Bob Fickel (54:25), Aaron Gentle (58:31) and Michael Gentle (1:06:11); while the 5km event featured Osmo Millridge (30:49) who placed third in his age category.

5-8/11/09 - NSW All Schools

Brandon Nairn has competed in the 16 years 1500m (4:56.95), 2000m Steeplechase (7:45.83) and 3000m (10:44.68) events at the NSW All Schools Championships being held from November 5 to 8 at SOPAC, Homebush. Well done Brandon.

25/10/09 - SMC Road Race

Garry Keir (1:47:31), Bob Fickel (2:00:06) and Michael Gentle (2:36:37) completed the half marathon; while Aaron Gentle (1:00:34) completed the 10km road race at Smithfield.

18/10/09 - Burnie Ten

David Burns has completed the 10km road race in Burnie (Tas) in a time of 52:34.

11-18/10/09 - World Masters Games

Osmo Millridge of Australia competes barefoot alongside Arnold Nett of Canada and Ron Cross of South Africa in the Men's 300 metre long hurdles event for 75-79 years during the 2009 World Masters Games at Olympic Park, Homebush, Sydney. 11/10/09 - Melbourne Marathon

Magda Karimali-Poulos has finished in third place in the women's marathon in a time of 2:40:55; while Thien Vuong has finished second in the male 20-24 years category with a time of 2:45:24. Verity Tolhurst has finished in 3:00:40. Congratulations to both Magda, Thien & Verity. Official Results

27/9/09 - Cronulla Spring Beach Classic

Verity Tolhurst has finished the 8km women's beach race in first place with a time of 34:18. Congratulations Verity. News

30/8/09 - Perth City to Surf Marathon
Congratulations to Magda Karimali-Poulos who has won the women's marathon at the Perth City to Surf in the time of 2:43:19. Great effort also by Verity Tolhurst who finished 6th female in the time of 2:59:52.

29/8/09 - Sutherland Half Marathon

Plenty of runners from Southside Masters across all events in Sutherland's 50th anniversary running of the half marathon on Lady Carrington Drive at Audley. Congratulations to Brandon Nairn for a great half marathon debut. Southside Results

23/8/09 - Mudgee Marathon
Congratulations to Thien Vuong who placed 2nd outright at Mudgee Marathon in a 12-minute PB time of 2:59:48 - breaking three hours for the first time. Bob Fickel ran his 194th marathon in 4:44:01

22/8/09 - Mt Wilson to Bilpin Bush Run
Garry Keir has completed the 35km bush trail run through the Blue Mountains in a time of 3:47:47.

21/8/09 - Sydney Tower Run Up
Great effort by Jeff Cosatto to scale the 1,504 steps of Sydney Tower in a time of 13:28.

20/8/09 - New Club Record
Chadi Elashkar has broken the men's 5000m track club record with his time of 15:33. The previous record of 15:44 was set by John Bowers Jnr on 28 January 1999. Congratulations Chadi.

16/8/09 - Wagga Wagga Trail Marathon
Bob Fickel completed his 193rd marathon in a time of 4:57:27 on a tough trail course that includes fence styles to climb over, bridges to cross, tunnels to clamber through, kangaroos on course and drizzling rain throughout the event. Well done!

16/8/09 - Bankstown Hidden Half Marathon
Congratulations to Magda Karimali-Poulos for winning the women's half marathon in a time of 1:20:21, and Belinda Marton who finished second in a time of 1:21:04. Southside Results

By winning Magda now leads the ANSW Female Distance Runner of the Year points score, with only the Sydney Marathon to be run. Magda is planning to run the Australian marathon championships in Melbourne in October, and will not run the Sydney marathon. Two other runners would then have a chance to stop Magda claiming this title, which she last won in 2007. They are Sutherland's Noni Clarke, and our Belinda Martin running for St George. In the Sydney marathon Noni needs to finish 6th or better ANSW female. Belinda needs to be the 1st ANSW female to TIE with Magda on points and the winner is then determined on a countback of lower total placings over the ANSW season. 

9/8/09 - City 2 Surf

26 July 2009 - Westlink M7 Marathon
Congratulations to Magda Karimali-Poulos for winning the women's marathon today in a time of 2:45:01. Verity Tolhurst finished 4th in 3:12:27, and Bob Fickel completed his 192nd marathon in a time of 4:25:18.

26 July 2009 - Sutherland to Surf

23 July 2009 - New Club Record
The men's 800m Club Record has been broken by Thien Vuong with his run of 2:10. This breaks the previous record of 2:11 that was initially set by Steffan Vaivars on 7 Dec 2000 and subsequently equalled by Glenn Gielissen (2 Dec 04 & 27 Dec 07) and Rob Coombe (2 Dec 04). Congratulations Thien.

19 July 2009 - Hunter Valley Marathon
Mike Palmer (1:24:34) and Garry Keir (1:46:30) completed the half marathon event at the Hunter Valley Marathon.

12 July 2009 - Sri Chinmoy Dolls Point Races
Magda Karimali-Poulos (1:22:21) has won the women's half marathon, while Verity Tolhurst (1:28:27) has finished third. David Sullivan (1:21:42)finished third in the men's half marathon. Congratulations for your podium finishes. The 10km event saw Paul Ray finish in 39:41.

5 July 2009 - Gold Coast Airport Marathon
Congratulations to Garry Keir (3:48:34) and Bob Fickel (4:31:32) for completing the Gold Coast marathon today.

5 July 2009 - Nowra King of the Mountain
Mike Palmer (2:19:46) and John Shaw (2:48:42) completed the 32km mountain run today. The run starts at Cambewarra before climbing over Mt Scanzi and finishing in Kangaroo Valley.

28 June 2009 - Woodford to Glenbrook
Tim Yates (1:47:31) and Garry Keir (2:02:46) completed the 25km trail run through the Blue Mountains.

25 June 2009 - New Club Record
One week after setting a new 3k female club record, Belinda Martin has broken the 5k female club record. Her time of 17:14 edges out the previous record of 17:15 that was set by Magda Karimali-Poulos on 29 June 2006. Great running Belinda.

21 June 2009 - Sydney Marathon Clinic
There was a good turn out of Southside Masters runners at Smithfield this month. The 30km race saw Verity Tolhurst (2:23:37), Garry Keir (2:41:50) and Bob Fickel (2:44:33); while Aaron Gentle (51:09) and Michael Gentle (58:32) ran in the 10km race.

18 June 2009 - New Club Record
Belinda Martin produced the best 3k time for females since we've been keeping records (1 January 1999). Belinda's time of 10:02 eclipses the previous record of 10:04 that had been set by Magda Karimali-Poulos on 12 July 2007. Well done Belinda.

14 June 2009 - Mini Mos Fun Run
Three Southside runners were in action today in the 10km Mini Mos fun run - Magda Karimali-Poulos (37:27), Brad Plummer (37:34) and Verity Tolhurst (38:56); while Thien Vuong (19:04) ran in the 5km event.

7 June 2009 - Macleay River Marathon
Bob Fickel completed his 190th marathon (4:15:44) in South West Rocks this weekend. Other Southside Masters runners were Michael Gentle (2:07:11) in the half marathon, plus Aaron Gentle (54:42) and Nicole Gentle (1:10:26) in the 10km.

31 May 2009 - Heart of the Lake
Congratulations to Thien Vuong who has won the 3km race today in a time of 10:28. John Dawlings had another good run in the 10km race finishing in a time of 41:24.

24 May 2009 - Spines On The Move
Congratulations to Magda Karimali-Poulos who won the women's 5km fun run at Sydney Olympic Park in a time of 17:52. Magda was second outright in the event - a great effort.

24 May 2009 - Sydney Marathon Clinic
The 25km road race at Smithfield saw John Dawlings (1:52:30) and Bob Fickel (2:14:24) as the only Southside Masters runners.

24 May 2009 - Rockdale City Community Fun Run & Walk
A good showing of Southside Masters runners at this 5km event with Thien Vuong 17:17; David Sullivan 17:22; John Shaw 19:27; Louise Denneen 21:30; Jason Vella 22:07; Agnieszka Toole 23:22; Roy Toole 23:48; Tim Garvey 24:02; David Burns 24:54; Michael Gentle 26:43, Aaron Gentle 26:56 and Nicole Gentle 28:18. The 5km walk saw Danny Toole pushing the pram to finish in 43:59.

17 May 2009 - Great Ocean Road Marathon
Congratulations to Verity Tolhurst (5th female, 3:25:31, 45km) and Magda Karimali-Poulos (2nd female, 1:26:49, 25km) on great runs at the Great Ocean Road Marathon held in Victoria.

17 May 2009 - SMH Half Marathon
Congratulations to Southside Masters runners who completed the SMH Half Marathon - Thien Vuong 1:19:38; John Dawlings 1:27:51; Garry Keir 1:40:34; Bob Fickel 1:48:29 and Tim Garvey 1:53:26.

3 May 2009 - Sutherland Shire Relay for Life
Two teams were entered in this year's Sutherland Shire Relay for Life that was held at Sylvania Waters Athletic Track on 2-3 May. Team Southside Masters was captained by Jean Toole, and finished in 11th position with a total of 255 laps (102 km). Team Bob's Fruit Box Sydney Markets Flemington was captained by Bob Fickel, and finished in 3rd position with a total of 415 laps (166 km). Thank you to everyone who has participated or sponsored either team.

Donations can still be made to Southside Masters or Bob's Fruit Box Sydney Markets Flemington.

This year's Relay saw the use of timing chips for the first time. Southside Masters runners who wore timing chips include Bob Fickel (196 laps, 78.4 km), Aaron Gentle (126 laps, 50.4 km), Agnieszka Toole (82 laps, 32.8 km), Michael Gentle (60 laps, 24.0 km) and Nicole Gentle (32 laps, 12.8 km).
